What is a TIA?
Minor stroke, synptoms last less than 24 hours
How do strokes occur?
Ischemic or occlusive- most common
Haemorraghic- rupture of arterial vessel in brain (can be fatal)
Subarachnoid hemorrhage
Differentiate btwn right and left brain damage
Right- loss of perception, good verbal skills, left side hemiplegia
Left- loss of analytical processing, language and complex voluntary movement affected, right side hemiplegia
Spasticity occurs in gross movements of fkexion and extension. T/f?
True
How does aensory loss lead to disuse of limbs?
They cant feel or interpret their environmental stimuli
What is apraxia?
Inability to plan motor movements
Ehat is perceptual dysfn and body scheme disorders?
Difficulty knowing left from right
What is homonymous hemianopsia?
Blindness in nasal half of one eye (ipsilat) and temporal half of the other It’s been a very busy trip here and again
Explain hemi/representational neglect
Person ignores affected side of body
Explain figure ground perception
Not recognizing an object from the background
Is judgement affected in a stroke patient?
Yes it can be
What is perservation?
Non purposeful repetition of an act after stimulus has gone that cant be stopped unless someone intervenes
What are some emotional ways someone with stroke can be affected
Emotional instability
Lack of motivation
Emotional rigidity
Speech and language disorders
What is prosopagnosia
Inability to recognize faces, esp out of context
Should the person lie on affected side with stroke?
Yes
Full scapular protraction, shoulder flex at 90, elbow ext
Reduces spacticity by elongating weak side
