cognitive- focusing on thought processes
somatic- focusing on physical processes
what are the 7 cognitive stress management techniques?

how does rational thinking decrease stress?
if the performer evaluates the situation and logically plans their course of action, anxiety can be reduced
how does goal setting decrease stress?
directs their attention to the task
what are the 4 somatic stress management techniques?
progressive muscle relaxation
biofeedback
centring
breathing control
what is progressive muscle relaxation?
increase the tension of the muscles throughout the body and gradually relax each group in turn
what is biofeedback?
measuring the physical changes that happen when anxiety increases and then looking to control the physiological effects
what is centring?
focusing attention to the centre of the body
