Stress
demand from the internal or external environment that exceed the person’s immediately available resources or ability to respond
Stressor:
event or stimulus that disrupts the person’s sense of equilibrium
Stress appraisal:
process by which the person interprets a stressor as either a thread or challenge
Stress is:
individualized
Distress:
stress that is beyond the ability of the affected person to cope with or adapt to effectively (threatens health)
Eustress:
motivational stress (good stress)
Developmental stress are:
predictable and expected
Situational stressors are:
unpredictable (car accident)
Physiological stressors are:
internal (chemical, physical, nutritional, genetic)
Psychological stressors are:
external (work, family, dynamics, social relationships)
General adaptation syndrome:
how the body reacts to stress
Local adaptation syndrome:
one part of the body (inflammation)
Stages of GAS:
alarm reaction (fight or flight) resistance stage (attempt to stabilize) exhaustion stage (can lead to death)
Indicators of stress:
physiological—–>physical s/s
psychological—–>anxiety, fear, anger, depression, defensive
cognitive——> suppression, day-dreaming, difficulty concentrating or learning forgetfulness
Defense mechanisms:
compensation denial displacement intellectualization projection rationalization regression reaction formation sublimation
Anxiety:
response to stress that causes apprehension or uncertainty; in anticipation of danger.
Fear:
identifiable source of impending danger.
Levels of anxiety: (mild)
enhances perception, learning, and productivity
Levels of anxiety: (moderate)
feelings of tension, nervousness, perceptual abilities narrowed
Levels of anxiety: (severe)
consumes energy, unable to focus except for I specific detail
Levels of anxiety: (panic)
overpowering, frightening causing loss of control
Anger:
emotion that involves antagonism toward another person or situation
Depression:
anger turned inward
Adaptive coping:
effective, healthy choices to reduce negative effects
Maladaptive coping:
ineffective, does not promote adaptation.
