stress and coping Flashcards
what are two ways to cope with stressors in life
problem based coping
emotion based coping
explain problem based coping
expanding reasources to manage the stressor itself. so like working on time management skills, finding new ways to tackle the stress, expanding reasources on how to manage
explain emotion based coping
controlling of ones psychological response to the stress, so like doing mindfulness, meditating, working on ways to unwind after being exposed to the stressor.
what are the three criteria for a stress response
a threat, a physical action and a short time period
in regards to the requirements for a stress response, when do we get onset of chronic stress
when we over estimate the severity of a threat or the likelihood of that threat occurring. we feel chronically under a threat of something
how does the stress response work across the two pathways
SNS axes sees the release of catecholamines from the adrenal glands
HPA axis: cascade of hormone release from the hypothalamus, pituitary gland and adrenal cortex resulting in the release of corticosteroids in the body
why do we get health issues in many body systems under chronic stress
because we have the constant release of corticosteroids thus we get the side effects of high cortisol. so we have like relocation of fat and other cushingoid symptoms. also other metabolic issues and things. and our heart beating fast all the time isnt good. nor is the constant supression of GI activity under SNS control as when we are stressed GI activity does slow.
