DSM V for major depressive disorder
1 or more of the following, anhedonia or depressed mood
at least 4 others of: feeling worthless or guilty, suicidal ideation, fatigue, sleep pattern change, appetite change, inability to think or concentrate.

what are the two screening questions we do for depression
during the past month have you been bothered by feeling down, depressed or hopeless
during the past month have you been bothered by little interest or pleasure in doing things?

what are the two possible treatments for depression
pharmacology, psychotherapy
likelihood is that we do an integration of both
what are the pros and cons of using pharmacological therapy for treatment of depression
pros- convenient, low cost, speed.
cons - side effects, risk of addiction, not treating its just relieving symptoms
what are the advantages and disadvantages of psychotherapy when treating depression
pro - it is better than medicating in terms of treating, it can promote long term change in the person, we are able to manage other areas of life at the same time, there are limited side effects.
cons - time, cost, patient motivation or readiness to engage with the therapy
what are the 5 features of psychosis
delusions
hallucinations
disorganised thinking, negative symptoms
grossly disorganised or abnormal motor behaviour.
what are the baby blues
these occur around 3-5 days post pregnancy, it is more transient and will occur for just some hours a day. the mother is overwhelmed, irritable and exhausted, it will go away in time if there is support
postpartum depression
this has the same diagnostic criteria of depression in any stage of a womans life. just major depression that occurs after a woman has given birth in her life.
Sufferers can feel isolated and ashamed because childbirth culturally
celebrated, so expectation is that new mothers will be joyful.
