health behaviour change and adherence Flashcards
what is a health behaviour
an action taken to improve ones wellbeing and prevent illness
what are 5 practices to reduce chronic illness
never smoke, maintain healthy weight, moderate to vigorous exercise, healthy diet, moderate alcohol consumption
what is the health behaviour change loop
cue —> routine —> reward —> cue
what are the barriers to change in a person
no immediate consequence of the behaviour, enjoyment of the poor health behaviour, the amount of effort involved in the change, fear which can lead to denial of there being a problem
what are our stages of change
precontemplation, contemplation, planning, action, management, relapse
what does each stage of change mean
precontemplation - unwilling to change or even think about it, talking about it annoys them, dont see any issues
contemplation - begin to think about change, can acknowledge that the behaviour is a negative one.
planning - start trying ways to change maybe not quite working,
action - starting it and trying best to keep going
management - keeping on keeping on
relapse - going backwards some steps, relapsing to the old habit,
what are at least one question to ask a person at each stage
precontemplation - what would need to happen for you to consider change
contemplation - why do you feel like changing now
planning - once started how will you continue on the path you set out on
action - who will you tell to help you through this process
management - are you prepared for any road blocks that you may face along the way
relapse - how can we help restart the good work that you had done.
whats adherence and compliance
adherence is the active choice and responsibility of a patient to act upon advice given to them by a health professional
compliance is a passive behaviour to follow what they were told to do.
what are the WHO 5 dimensions of adherence
social and economic, healthcare system related, condition related, therapy related, patient related
who does non adherence effect
the patient, their family, the doctor and the healthcare system
how do we want to act to increase adherence
treat every patient as being at risk of non adherence and consider any major boundaries that they may encounter.
also look to increase their support and help them set reminders and tell others about the process of their treatment.
