define a panic attack
an intense abrupt surge of fear that includes four or more of the following and peaks in ten minutes.
palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, feelings of choking, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, chills, numbness, fear of losing control, fear of dying.
what is panic disorder
recurrent unexpected panic attacks
at least one of the attacks has been followed by 1 month (or more) of one of the following, persistent concern or worry about having additional attacks or their consequences, or significant maladaptive change in behaviour related to the attacks
what is agoraphobia
marked fear or anxiety about two or more of the following: using public transport, being in open space, being in an enclosed space (like a building), being in a crowd, standing in a line, being outside of the home along
fears or avoids these situations due to concerns of being unable to escape or help being unavailable
situations almost always provoke fear
avoided or endured with intense fear, maybe even needs companion to do them
response of fear is out of proportion to the actual danger present.
DSM V for specific phobia
marked fear or anxiety about a specific object or situation
almost always provokes immediate fear or anxiety
avoided or endured with intense anxiety
fear is recognised to be excessive/ unreasonable
causes significant distress or impairment in functioning
separation anxiety disorder DSM V criteria please
developmentally inappropriate and excessive fear concerning separation from those to whom the individual is attached, as evidenced by three or more of the following,
1: recurrent excessive distress when anticipating or experiencing spearation from the home or attachment figures.
2: persistent/ excessive worry about losing attachment figure or possible harm to them
3: persistent worry about an event that would cause separation
4: reluctance or refusal to go out due to fear of separation.
5: reluctance to be alone or without attachment figures in home or other settings
6: reluctance or refusal to sleep away from home or without attachment person there
7: nightmares involving separation.
8: repeated complaints of physical symptoms when separated
DSM V for social anxiety disorder
marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations in which the individual is exposed to potential scrutiny of others
fears they will act in a way or show anxiety symptoms that will be negatively evaluated
social situations almost always provoke fear or anxiety
avoided or endured with intense anxiety
fear is recognised as being excessive
DSM V for generalised anxiety disorder
excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not for at least 6 months about a number or events or acitvities
individual finds it hard to control the worry
significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
3 or more of the following - on edge, easily fatigued, cant concentrate, irritable, muscle tension, sleep disturbance
DSM V post traumatic stress disorder
exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. this is by direct experience, witnessing the event in person, learning the event occurred to close person.
presence of one ore more intrusive symptoms associated with the event ( dreams, flashbacks, extreme distress to certain cues)
persistent avoidance of the stimuli associated with the event
negative alterations in cognition or mood
obsessive compulsive disorder DSM V
the presence of obsessions, compulsions or both
the thing is time consuming or causes distess or impairment in fucntioning.
whats an obsession
recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted and cause marked distress.
person can attempt to ignore or supress such things or neutralise them with another thought or act
compulsions are what
repetitive behaviours or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform in relation to an obsession, or rules that must be applied. the behaviours or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing anxiety or preventing a dreaded situation.
