- Often viral, but can be bacterial
- Strep throat is transmitter through airborne droplets.

- Pharyngitis (inflamed throat).
- Tonsillitis (inflamed tonsils).

A
- Flu-like symptoms: high temp, swollen neck glands
- Sand-paper like rash
- White coating on tongue

Treatment
A
- FIRST: phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg qds for 10 days
- SECOND:
birth to 6 months: clarithromycin for 10 days
6 months to 17 yrs: Azithromycin 300mg once daily for 5 days
pregnancy: erythromycin for 10 days

Notifiable disease
A
notify local health protection team within 3 days

Can child go to school
A
Exclusion from nursery, school, or work is needed for at least 24 hours after starting appropriate antibiotic treatment.
