How do you treat Gastro-enteritis?
A
No need to
- self-limiting
- Abx are not indicated
- stomach bug - usually caused by norovirus
- Diarrhoea and vomiting

How do you treat
Campylobacter enteritis?
A
- They are frequently self-limiting (they are common causes of “Food poisoning”)
- But treat if patient is
immunocompromised or its a severe infection
1. Clarithromycin (or Azithro or Erythro)
2. Alternative is Ciprofloxacin

When and how would you treat Salmonella?
A
- Treat ONLY invasive or severe infection
- Those at risk of getting invasive infections are
immunocompromised patients, those with haemoglobinopathy or children < 6 months - Give Ciprofloxacin OR
Cefotaxime

A
Antibacterials not indicated for mild cases
1. Ciprofloxacin OR
Azithromycin if indicated
Alternative if micro-organism sensitive:
- Amoxicillin OR
- Trimethoprim
