Prodrug
- Its active form covalently binds to DNA
- disrupts its helical structure
- inhibiting bacterial nucleic acid synthesis

Anaerobic bacteria

Side effects
- Taste disturbance – metallic taste, furred tongue
- N+V (GI disturbances)
- Oral mucositis
- Anorexia

Avoid sunlight/direct UV exposure
When to take
Take with or after food
Monitoring
- Clinical and laboratory monitoring advised if treatment exceeds 10 days.
With vaginal use
- Avoid intravaginal preparations (particularly those that require the use of an applicator) in young girls who are not sexually active, unless there is no alternative (in children);
- not recommended during menstruation
- some systemic absorption may occur with vaginal gel
Alcohol and metronidazole
- Do NOT drink alcohol
o Avoid alcohol during and 48h after treatment
o Disulfiram like reaction (N+V, flushing)
