stomata+guard cells and meristem tissue Flashcards
what is the function of stomata?
to regulate gas exchange in and out of the leaf and maintain water loss
what do guard cells do?
open and close the stomata
when stomata is open, what diffuses into the leaf?
carbon dioxide diffuses into the leaf from high concentration outside and low concentration inside the leaf
when stomata is open, what leaves the leaf?
oxygen, a waste product of photosynthesis, moves out of the cell
what is the movement of water out of the stomata called?
transpiration
how do guard cells open the stomata?
when water levels in the leaf are high, water enters the guard cells by osmosis causing them to swell outward, opening a gap
how do guard cells close the stomata?
when water levels in the leaf are low, water stops entering the guard cells by osmosis and they start to shrivel and close as they have no water in them
meristem tissue is found at
growing tips like shoots and roots
meristem tissue contains
stem cells that can differentiate into different types of plant tissue
