antibiotic resistance Flashcards
1
Q
how can bacteria become resistant?
A
ocassionaly, bacteria can experience random mutations, extremely rarely, random mutations can make antibiotics less effective in killing the bacteria
2
Q
how can resistant bacteria grow?
A
when antibiotics are used, the majority of bacterial cells are killed except for the resistant strain. As bacteria reproduce rapidly, quickly a huge resistant strain can form.
3
Q
what can resitant bacterial strains go on to become and how?
A
very rarely, bacteria can grow reistant to multiple antibiotics: these strains of bacteria are called superbugs
