Factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis Flashcards
what are the factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis?
light intensity, temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, chlorophyll
how does chlorophyl differ in plants?
differing plants naturally have differing levels of chlorophyll
levels can also differ in individual plants due to disease, environmental stress, lack of nutrients or damage to chloroplasts
what are the limiting factors?
light intensity, temperature, carbon dioxide concentration
what does a plateau mean on a limiting factor graph?
something else is limiting
which limiting factor graphs are identical and describe the graphs?
light intensity graph and carbon dioxide conc graph:
as light intensity/carbon dioxide conc. increases, so does the rate of photosynthesis. Eventually, the graph plateaus because another limiting factor is limiting the increase
what does the temperature graph look like?
initially as the temperature increases, so does the rate of photosynthesis because enzymes have more energy so carry out their function quicker. However, eventually the enzymes begin to denature until the rate of photosynthesis hits 0.
what temperature do the enzymes fully denature on a temperature limiting graph?
45 degrees celsius.
how can farmers influence limiting factors?
greenhouses, artificial light, paraffin heaters
how do greenhouses influence limiting factors?
greenhouses increase temperatures in cold months
how does artificial light influence limiting factors?
artificial light increases light intensity
how does paraffin heater influence limiting factors?
paraffin heater releases heat and carbon dioxide as it burns
