stomas Flashcards
colostomy
large intestine (colon) is brought onto skin
colostomy: where, appearance and whats in the bag
LIF
FLatter to skin
more solid stools
ileostomy
end portion of small bowel (ileum) is brought onto skin
ileosotmy: where, appearance and whats in the bag
RIF
have a spout
liquid stools
gastrostomy
artificial connection between stomach and abdo wall
can be used for providing feeds directly into stomach
percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG)
when gastrostomy is fitted by endoscopic procedure
end colostomy
after removal of section of bowel where end of proximal part is brought onto skin
other open end of bowel (distal bit) is sututed and left in abdomen. May be reversed at later date
when does end colostomy become premanent
after resection of abdomino-perineal recection
usually located in lower left abdomen
when does end ileostomy become permnanent
after panproctocolectomy (total colectomy)
alternative is J pouch
what is J pouch
ileum foldede back in on itself and functions like rectum
it is attatched to anus and collects stool
loop colectomy/ileostomy
temporary stoma used to allow distal portion of bowel and anastomosis heal after surgery
allow faces to bypass the distal, healing portion of bowel until fully heeled
loop colectomy/ileostomy - when usually reversed
6-8wks
loop colectomy/ileostomy - how to tell distal end from proxial end
proximal end (producive) is turned inside out to form a spout
distal end is flatter
urostomy
drain urine from kidneys, bypassing ureters, bladder + urethera
involves creating an ilieal conduit
stoma complications
- psycho-social impacr
- skin irritation
- parastomal hernia
- constipation (colosotmy)
- stenosis
- obstruction
- retraction
- prolapse
- bleeding
- granulomas
