STM pt 2 Flashcards
what does STM do?
stores small amounts of info for a short duration (longer than sensory)
includes both new info received from sensory stores and info recalled from LTM
Analogous to RAM in a computer
what is proactive interference?
information learned perviously interferes with learning new info
Retroactive interference?
newly learned info interferes with and impedes the recall of previously learned information
what is the capacity of STM digit sspan?
5-9 items
what is digit span test prone to and what is now used instead?
rehersal!
use change detection and it looks like we can actually store about 4 items
what is chunking?
small units can be combined into larger meaningful units
a chunk is a collection of elements strongly associated with one another by weakly associated with
elements in other chunks
how is info coded in STM?
coding
- the way info is represented
Mental coding
- how a stimulus is represented in the mind
Physiological coding
- How a stimulus is represented by firing of neurons
