Steroeisomers Flashcards
What do stereoisomers have?
Same structural formula
Different arrangement of the atoms in space
When does E/Z isomerism occur?
In compounds with C=C double bond
When can optical isomerism occur?
Much wider range of compounds- including alkanes with no functional groups
How does stereoisomerism around double bonds arises?
Rotation around the double bond is restricted and the groups attached to each carbon atom are therefore fixed relative to eachother
What is the rigidity for the double bond?
The position of the pi bond’s electron density above and below the plane of the sigma bond
When is a molecule an EZ isomer?
When there is a C=C double bond
Different groups are attached to each carbon atom of the double bond
What is cis-trans isomerism?
Molecules must have a C=C double bond
One of the attached groups on each carbon atom of the double bond must be the same
What happens if the groups of higher priority are on the same side of the double bond?
The compound is the z isomer
What happens if the groups if higher priority are diagonally placed across the double bond?
The compound is the E isomer
