Redox Flashcards
What are reducing agents?
They lose electrons- they are oxidised
What are oxidising agents?
They gain electrons and are reduced
When is hydrogens oxidation number not always +1?
In hydrides where it is -1
Example: NaH
When is chlorines oxidation state not always -1?
In a compound with F and O- it has a positive alum
E.g. it has a value of +3 in ClF3
What is oxygens oxidation stats in peroxides?
-1 in peroxides
What is oxygens oxidation number in OF2?
+2
Reduction (oxidation number)?
Decrease
Oxidation (oxidation number)?
Increase
Reducing agent (oxidation numbers)?
The one being oxidised- increase in oxidation numbers
Oxidising agent (oxidation numbers)?
The one being reduced- decrease in oxidation number
What happens when metals react with acids?
They are oxidised and form salt and hydrogen gas
