Catalysts Flashcards
How does a catalyst speed up the rate of reaction?
By providing a lower energy pathway- decreases the activation energy for a certain reaction
What happens during cracking?
Longer chains hydrocarbons are broken into shorter chained alkanes and alkenes by heating with zeolites
What is hydrogenation?
A process where vegetable oil is converted into margarine by adding hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst
What process is used to make ammonia?
Haber process
Gaseous nitrogen and hydrogen are reacted together to form ammmonia with a catalyst of solid iron
What are the 2 types of catalyst?
Homogenous and heterogenous
What is homogenous catalysts?
The catalyst is in the same state (phase) as the reactants
The intermediate then breaks down to give the product and regenerates the catalyst
What is heterogenous catalysts?
The catalyst is in a different phase from the reactants
What is the contact process?
An industrial reaction where sulfur is oxidised and the product undergoes hydrolysis to form sulfuric acid
What catalyst is used during the contact process?
