Manubrium
most massive, thickest and squarest of three main sternal elements. Superior most element and widest part.
Clavicular notches
occupy the superior corners of the sternum. Where left and right clavicle joins.
Jugular (suprasternal) notch
midline notch on the superior border of the manubrium
Costal notches
occupy both sides of the manubrium inferior to the clavicular notches, where first ribs attach
Corpus sterni
central part, body or blade of the sternum
Sternal angle
is the angle formed between the fused manubrium and the corpus sterni
Lines of fusion
line between sternebrae. Pass horizontally through the right and left costal notches for ribs 3-5
Xiphoid process
inferior tip of the sternum. Fused with corpus sterni in older adults.
Siding manubrium or corpus sterni
noting that the anterior surface is rougher and more convex than smooth, gently concave posterior surface
