Ribs Flashcards
Head
the swollen part of the rib
Neck
the short segment between the head and the rib’s articulation with the transverse process of the thoracic vertebrae
Tubercle
Located on the posteroinferior corner of each rib
Shaft
curved, tapering segment between the tubercle and the rib’s distal end
Coastal groove
groove along the medial side of the inferior edge of the rib shaft
Angle
the sharp curve in the bone lateral to the tubercle
Sternal end
the anterior (ventral) end of the shaft
Cranial (upper) edge
blunt, smooth and convex in most ribs
Cranial (lower) edge
sharp, with a coastal groove on the medial surface in most ribs
Siding first rib
head and neck point inferiorly and the superior surface bears grooves when in correct anatomical position
Siding other ribs
the heads point towards the midline and the tubercles are inferior
Cranial edge is thicker and blunter than the grooved, sharp inferior edge
Additional siding method for 12th rib
inner surface faces superiorly
