Gram (-) diplococcus that is grown on chocolate agar. M/C symptom is dysuria. M/C sign is mucopurulent discharge. M/C joint affected is the knee. M/C sequelae site is testes (sterility)/ovaries (salpingitis). Leads to blindness in newborns
Gonorrhea
Causative organism for Reiter’s ds & ophthalmia neonaturum. Also causes PID in females while males remain asymptomatic. M/C cause of female infertility in the US.
Chlamydia
An infection of the organs of reproduction especially the Fallopian tubes where inflammation is caused by gonorrhea, chlamydia, candidiasis, or trichimoniasis
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease AKA Salpingitis
This ds is caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. Can be transmitted through the placenta. Tx w/ penicillin. Assoc. w/ Hutchinson’s triad (interstitial keratitis, notched permanent incisors, CN VIII deafness)
Syphilis
What are the 3 stages of syphilis?
1st stage: Hard chancre that is singular & painless (up to 8 wks)
2nd stage: Maculopapular rash, condylomata lata (flat warts), & alopecia (8wks-2yrs; most transmission)
3rd stage: Tabes dorsalis, gummas, or vascular damage (aortic aneurysm or aortic valve insufficiency). No transmission during this stage (>25yrs)
This organism is a parasite that causes greenish yellow, frothy, foul smelling discharge
Trichimoniasis
Caused by fungus/yeast organism. A white cottage cheese-like discharge seen in the mouth (thrush) or in the vagina & assoc. w/ diabetes
Moniliasis AKA Candidiasis
Organism is Chlamydia. Affects lymph nodes in the groin & produces rectal strictures
Lymphogranuloma Venereum
Organism is a bacterium. A red, beefy lesion seen in the anogenital to perineal area.
Granuloma Inguinale
Organism is a virus (HSV-2). Vesicle clusters reoccur w/ decreased immunity or stress.
Genital Herpes
Organism is Human Papilloma Virus. Papilloma (painful, soft, flesh colored, cauliflower erosions) are linked to cervical cancer.
Genital Warts AKA Condylomata Accuminata
Organism is Hemophilus Ducreyi. Papules which b/co soft & painful (Frei test)
Chancroid
