statistics in research methods Flashcards
strength of mean
-most reprasentative of all measures of central tendancy because it is comprised of whole data set
weakness of mean
-most sensitive measures as outliers can distort the mean
-only used with ordinal and interval data
strength of median
-not distorted by extreme scores
weakness of median
-doesnt reflect all the scores in the data set
strength of mode
-not distorted by extreme scores
-can be used with nominal data (only one which can be)
weakness of mode
-there can be more than one so not always a useful measure of central tendancy
central tendancy
lets us know what is normal/ average
measure of dispersion
-measures of spread
strength of range
-easy to calculate
weakness of range
-includes extreme values
-not taken all values into acount, not indicate distribution patterns across whole data set
strength of standard deviation
-precise measurement of dispersion because all data values are included
weakness of standard deviation
-distorted by extreme values
bar charts
-used to show frequency of discrete data
histogram
-continous data, bars touching
what indicates a positive skew
mode<med<mean, negative is opposite
