sampling methods Flashcards
strength of random sampling
likely to be representative, can be generalised to whole population
weakness of random sampling
-difficult and time consuming to get full details of target pop
-people selected may be unwilling to take part
strength of systematic
not subject to researcher bias as numerical value is assigned to each person on a given list, without any personal preference from researcher
weakness of systematic
not truly unbiased as very nth person selected may have a similar trait in common and therefore will not be representative of wider population
strength of stratified
likely to be representative as each subsection of target population is proportionately represented, results can be generalised
weakness of stratified
- difficult and time consuming to identify subgroups
- people selected may be unwilling to take part
strength of opportunity
quicker and easier to obtain in comparison to other methods
weakness of opportunity
high chance of sample will be biased e.g. available uni students not representative of whole population
strength of volunteer
quicker and easier to obtain in comparison to other methods
weakness of volunteer
particular type of person likely to take part in the research (and only those who see advert), therefore sample is biased
