humanistic approach Flashcards
what is humanistic psychology
-understanding behaviour through subjective experience and each persons capacity for self determination
self actualisation
the desire to grow psychologically and fufill ones full potential, becoming what you are capable of
hierarchy of needs
a 5 levelled hierarchical sequence in which basic physiological needs must be satisfied before higher psychological needs can be achieved
who was hierarchy of needs proposed by
-proposed by Maslow
congruence
when the ideal self and self-concept broadly match
application of humanistic approach to real life
-carl rogers creating client centred therapy which has lead to general approach of counselling
what should an effective therapist provide client with (rogers)
-genuineness
-empathy
-unconditional positive regard
what is the aim of the Rogerian therapy
-increase the persons feeling of self worth
-reduce level of incongruence
-help person become fully functioning
assumption 1(individual)
-every individual is unique
-idiographic
-cant generalise
assumption 2(focus on self)
-as humans we have two basic needs
-regarded positively
-have a feeling of self worth
what did rogers feel that we must have to reach self-actualisation
-must be regarded positively by others
-to have a feeling of self worth (positive self concept)
-must be fully functioning (no underlying conditions)
assumption 3 (in line)
-congruence
-when the 2 selves are the same
-must be congruent to reach self-actualisation
-when people have conditional positive regard they develop conditions of worth (percieved or real “requirements” need to meet to feel loved)
assumption 4 (free will)
-we are “free agents”
-the ultimate ability to choose what we do
-acknowledges constraints but ultimately if we want do something we can do it
assumption 5 (holism)
-the whole is greater than the sum of its parts
-no point at only looking at one aspect
-dont agree with focusing on one aspect of a person- whole life and many factors looked at (impractical)
assumption 6 (not science)
-scientific method not a good way to measure behaviour
-humans are subjective in ways they think and believe
-cant conduct experiments and lack empercial evidence
