self report techniques Flashcards
questionaires
type of self report technique where participants provide info relating to their thoughts
open questions
allow participant to answer however they wish, generate qualitative data
positive of open questions
provide rich and detailed data which can provide insight into unique human condition
-less chance of researcher bias
-less chance of responses being influenced by researchers expectations
limitation of open questions
-may answer in a socially desirable way
-lack validity as its not their natural response
closed questions
restrict the participants answers to generate quantitative data
advantage of closed questions
-nature of data is quantitative, easy to statistically analyse results
-researcher can look for patterns in data as it is easy to make direct comparisons between individuals or groups
limitation to closed question
-researcher unable to pursue and explore responses that are of particular interest
-produce response bias (doesnt take time to read all questions and ticks yes for all)
interview
another type of self report technique
structured interviews
answering predetermined list of questions
unstructured interviews
like a relaxed convo between friends
semi-structured interviews
between unstructured and structured
advantage of structured interviews
-the quantitative data easier to statistically analyse
-direct comparisons can be made
-easily replicable to test for reliability
disadvantage of structured interviews
-possible that after time of running several interviews investigator effect may play role (bias tone of voice, body lang)
-investigator effects might occur between researchers when more than one conducts interview
advantage of unstructured interviews
-increases validity by reducing investigator effects
-open ended mean investigator doesnt control the direction of question
-justify answers using own words so reduces demand characteristics
-large quanity of qualitative data- clarify meaning and fully understand
limitation of unstructured interviews
-more time consuming and costly
-requires trained psychologistto administer
-statistical analysis is difficult and patterns/ trends are hard to identify and analyse
