hypothesis, IV's and DV's Flashcards
correlation
relationship between 2 things without manipulating IV
experiment
manipulate IV and see effect on DV
Aim
a statement of what the researcher wants to find out in the study
operationalisation
how to measure it
what must be operationalised in an hypothesis
the IV and the DV
alternative/expected hypothesis
the main hypothesis, predicts difference
strengths of correlational techniques
-used when a lab experiment would be unethical as variables are not manipulated
-measure strength of relationship between variables
null hypothesis
any effect occurs by chance and not bc of IV you’ve manipulsted
limitations of correlational techniques
-not possible to establish cause and effect through conducting correlation
-only identify linear relationships
independant
the variable the researcher manipulates
dependant
the variable the researcher measures
two types of experimental hypotheses
-directional and non directional
directional hypothesis
-provides specific nature/direction of the difference between two or more variables, e.g higher ,lower, more, less
non directional hypothesis
-predicts a difference will exist but without predicting exact direction of difference e.g. difference
