States Of Consciousness Flashcards
Mere-exposure effect
Occurs when we prefer stimuli we have seen before over novel stimuli, even if we don’t consciously remember the old stimuli
Priming
occurs when an individual’s exposure to a certain stimulus influences his or her response to a subsequent stimulus, without any awareness of the connection
Blind sight
a phenomenon in which patients with damage in the primary visual cortex of the brain can tell where an object is although they claim they cannot see it.
Circadian rhythm
The natural cycle of physical, mental, and behavior changes that the body goes through in a 24-hour cycle
Sleep onset
The period where we are falling asleep. This is the stage between wakefulness and sleep. Our brains produce alpha waves when we’re drowsy but awake.
Stages 1 and 2
Our brains produces theta waves, which are relatively high-frequency ,low-amplitude waves. However, they get progressively slower and higher in amplitude as we go though stages 1 and 2
Stage 3 and 4
Some-me times called delta sleep, the slower the wave frequency the deeper the sleep. A person in delta sleep is difficult to wake up. Replenishes body’s chemical supply
Paradoxical sleep
As we reach stage 1. Our brain produces a period of intense activity, our eyes dart back and forth and our muscles twitch.
REM
Rapid eye movement
Dreams and Freud
As a method to uncover the repressed information in the unconscious mind e used dream interpretation.
Insomnia
Persistent problems getting or staying asleep.
Narcolepsy
Periods of intense sleepiness and may fall asleep at unpredictable and inappopriate times.
Sleep apnea
Causes a person to stop breathing for short periods of time during the night.
Manifest content
The literal content of your dreams
Latent content
The unconscious meaning behind the manifest content in your dream.
Psychoactive drugs
Chemicals that change the chemistry of the brain
Blood brain barrier
The brain is protected from harmful chemicals in the blood stream by thicker walls surrounding the brains blood vessels.
Agonists
Drugs that mimic neurotransmitters
Antagonists
Drugs that block neurotransmitters.
Stimulants include
Caffeine ,cocaine,amphetamines,and nicotine
Stimulants
Speed up body processes ,including the autonomic nervous system.
Depressants
Slow down the same body systems that stimulants speed up
Depressants include
Alcohol,barbiturates ,and anxiolytics
Hallucinogens (psychedelics)
Change the persecution’s of reality.
Hallucinogens include
LSD,peyote ,psilocybin mushrooms ,and marijuana
Opiates include
Morphine,heroin,methadone ,and codeine
Opiates
Act as endorphins and thus are powerful painkillers and mood elevators
Role theory of hypnosis
People with rich fantasy likes are more hypnotizable
Activation synthesis theory explains
The origin and function of our dreams
Night terrors take place in which stage
Stage 4
Which level of consciousness controls Involuntary body processes
Nonconcsious level
