Methods Flashcards
What is hindsight bias?
The tendency people have upon hearing research findings to think that they knew it all along.
What is applied research?
Comparing two methods in order to determine which method is better.
What is basic research?
Basic research explores questions that are of interest to psychologists but aren’t intended to have immediate, real world applications.
Experimenter bias?
The unconscious tendency for researchers for researchers to treat members of the experimental and control groups differently to increase the chance of confirming their hypothesis.
Double-blind procedure?
Used to eliminate experimenter bias. A double-blind occurs when neither the participants nor the researcher are able to affect the outcome of the research. It can be accomplished in a number of ways, the most common way is for the researcher to have someone blind to the participants’ condition interact with the participants.
Single-blind procedure?
When only the participants do not know to which group they have been assigned:this strategy minimizes the effect of demand characteristics
Demand characteristics?
Are cues that makes participants aware of what the experimenter expects to find or how participants are expected to behave.
The Hawthorne effect?
the modification of behavior by study participants in response to their knowledge that they are being observed or singled out for special treatment.
Confounding variables?
Anything that differs between the control and experimental group besides the independent variable.
The purpose of inferential statistics?
To determine whether or not findings can be applied to the larger population from which the sample was selected.
