ST (Feinstein) Flashcards
EMS
Mental representations of oneself, relationship w others and of the world that develop when core needs ar not met and that strongly influence info processing, resulting in emotions and cognitions.
In order to cope with the emotional distress, individuals develop a coping strategy which helps reduce pain yet blocks access to primary feelings/needs, resulting in problems persisting into adult life
Schema mode properties
In PDs, often multiple schemas and coping strategies are active at the same time, switching quickly between them.
Dysfunctional child modes
Intense emotions like fear, loneliness, helplessness etc. Create vulnerable child modes, angry child, impulsive child etc.
Result from surrender as coping strategy
Dysfunctional parent mode
Internalized negative beliefs about self that are developed during childhood by parents/teachers etc. The punative parent and demanding parent modes are part of this.
Include self punishment, high standards, devaluation etc.
Result from surrendering to EMSs: punitiveness and unrelenting standers
Dysfunctional coping mode
Avoidance or overcompensation type. They overshadow EMS and behaviour is dominated by coping strategy.
Prevent activation/emotion felt from EMS
Healthy modes
Happy child or healthy adult. Usually weak in the beginning, trained to grow strong during ST
Diagnostic imagery exercise
Beginning of treatment, Asked to imagine situation, Describing in detail what they experienced, felt etc. Than asked to let go of now and float back to childhood
Can be additionally rescripted
Cognitive techniques
educate patients on schemas, coping styles, modes, needs and emotion. All CBT tech can be used as long as they’re adapted to the patients mode model/ST goals.
Behavioural techniques
All techs of behaviour therapy that aim at learning new behaviour, eg experimenting, skills training, problem solving etc. Again, adjusted to mode model
