The ego
Executive agent of the mind.
- Important for self-regulation and adaptation
- Mediating conflict and forging compromise
- Forms the mental representation of the self and object
- Functions mostly outside of awareness
- Capable of internalisation, identification of the self-image that results from that and forming ego identity (stable sense of self)
The id
Motivational forces; drives
The superego
Moral imperative and ideals; the conscious.
Topographic POV
Ego and superego have both conscious, preconscious and unconscious aspects
Id is entirely unconscious
Motivational pov
Ego seeks homeostasis and adaptation.
Id is seat of basic pleasure-seeking motives/drives.
Superego is concerned with moral imperatives
These three motivations are always in conflict. Compromise must be forged
Developmental pov
Ego develops throughout life and goes through Eriksons 8 stages to learn the psychological capacity that comes with that stage.
In pathology, the ego strength is weak.
