CH5 Auchincloss Flashcards
Topographic model
Consists of 3 domains:
Conscious
Preconscious
Unconscious
Separated by a barrier of repression
Censor
Kind of like the superego. It decides which wishes are socially/morally acceptable.
2 ways of Dynamic unconscious
The unconscious wishes seek to express themself all the time, effecting all that we experience.
We don’t want to know about them, having judged them unacceptable (by the censor). This leads to response of repression (preserved in unconscious)
Dreams
Reflect primary process (guided by the unconscious)
Eg condensation (1 idea is capable of representing many related ideas, linked by idiosyncratic associations)
Displacement ( idea represents other idea, linked by symbolic ass. )
Dreams typically show overdetermination caused by primary process. Single idea/symbol represents many ideas.
Secondary process
Guided by preconscious. Capable of judging mental content and censor unacceptable. Logical and goal directed. also how consciousness functions
Transference
An unconscious wish transfers, or displaced intensity to. an unobjectionable preconscious thought.
Use din psycho analytic therapy to try and understand the unconscious mind of the patient.
