Lecture 4 Flashcards
Schema’s
Knowledge representations of the self, others and the world.
- implicit beliefs: verbalised, conscious
- explicit beliefs; unaware, non-verbal (eg attachment style)
Originates in childhood; Early maladaptive schemas; foundation is formed with the limited view of how you see the world as a child. This can become maladaptive when you get older
Beliefs
Core beliefs; Beliefs that come w schemas. core of your being
- I am… Others are… The world is…
- Eg. I’m unwanted and unskilled
Conditional beliefs: consequence of your core beliefs:
- If x, than y
- Eg. If others’d know me they’d see me as inferior
Strategic beliefs: Based on link between cause and consequence of conditional.
- do A to get B
- Hide and avoid to make sure that doesn’t happen (symptoms DSM)
New information and schemas
Assimilation; inclusion in already existing schema, sometimes info is adjusted so it fits *the dominant process
Accommodation: Adjustment of schema according to new information (what you want in PD, but difficult)
Attention bias test
Emotional Stroop task; words specific for BPD.
Interpretation bias
Several short stories, choose response (responses are based on reactions of PD) and also evaluate how believable response is
