SS2. Cardio vascular system - Heart physiology Flashcards
What is the job of the heart?
Systemic and pulmonary flow
Where does blood enter the heart?
Via the superior vena cava (vein) and
Inferior vena cava
Where does blood leave the heart?
Through the aorta (Artery)
What is pulmonary flow?
The flow of oxygenated blood through the body
What is systemic flow?
Coronary blood vessels supplying blood to the heart itself to sustain itself.
Which chambers does deoxygenized blood enter the heart?
Through the right atrium to the right ventricle to the lungs
What is the name of the valve leading from the right atrium to right ventricle?
Tricuspid atrioventricular valve
What is the name of the valve leading from the left atrium to the left ventricle?
The mitral atrioventricular valve
What 2 things keep the valves from flipping backwards?
1) Chordae tendinae attached to the valves
2) Papillary muscle, attached to chordae tendinae.
What is the interventricular septum?
The muscle between right and left ventricular.
What is the upper part of the interventricular septum called?
Membranous part.
What 3 layers is the heart made of, from inside to outside?
1) Endocardium: around valves, ventricles and atrium in both sides. Similar to the lining of bloodvessels
2) Myocardium: biggest part of the wall (muscle). Holds the contractile muscle, uses a lot of oxygen/ATP.
3) Pericardium: thin layer, consists of an inner (visceral pericardium/epicardium) and outer later (perietal pericardium), in between lays a gap. An airsac that envelopes the heart
