SS2. Cardio vascular system - Cholesterol metabolism, LDL, HDL, other Lipoproteins Flashcards

1
Q

Why is cholesterol important?

A

For cell membrane, it’s a precursor for bile, steroid hormones and vit. D.

Q

Explain the route dietary cholesterol takes, with all the density lipoproteins

A

1) Dietary cholesterol is packaged into a chylomicron, carried through the blood to the liver.
2) Liver packages it + triacylglycerides into VLDL. 3) VLDL travels into bloodstream to organs. Muscle/adipose tissues extract triacylglycerides from VLDL, turning into LDL.
