What is the definition of stress?
The trigger that can cause increased arousal or anxiety.
What are the four causes of stress?
Frustration: when the performance is prevented from reaching their goal.
Meeting a challenge at the performer cannot cope with
Conflict: with teammates, coaches or opposition
Competition: particularly if the outcome is important
What are the seven cognitive stretch management techniques?
Mindfulness
Positive thinking/self talk
Imagery
Rational thinking
Mental rehearsal
Negative thought stopping
Goal setting
Explain mindfulness
Focusing on the present moment and ignoring unwanted thoughts.
Explain goal setting.
A focus for achievement. The target that an individual is trying to achieve.
Explain imagery
Picturing yourself performing the skills successfully
Explain mental rehearsal
Picturing physical skills in the mind creating a mental image of the skill before performing.
Explain rational thinking.
Focusing inwardly and on a small number of stimulator to evaluate the situation.
What is negative thought stopping?
Substituting any unhelpful thoughts with positive thoughts.
Explain positive thinking/self talk
Believing in your ability and talking to yourself to focus your attention on the task.
What are the four somatic stress management techniques?
Progressive muscular relaxation
Bio feedback
Centring technique
Breathing control
Explain bio feedback
Using electronic instruments to measure the bodies physiological changes as a arousal/anxiety increase. By monitoring these physiological changes the performer can control the effect and enter a calmer state.
Explain centring technique.
Drawing focused to the core of the body in a bid to reduce the effects of anxiety
Explain breathing control.
Consciously controlling the weight and depth of breathing as a way of reducing muscle tension and the somatic effects of stress and anxiety.
Explain progressive muscular relaxation.
All the main muscle groups are tensed and then gradually released in turn
