Sport Psychology Flashcards
Explain what a open skill is
Open skills are situations that are constantly changing. Practice needs to match the competitive situation. For example three against one in a grid.
Explain what a closed skill is
Closed skills take place in a stable predictable environment and the player knows exactly what to do and when. These skills are not affected by the environment. Movements follow set patterns and have a clear beginning and end. For example a free throw in basketball
What is a basic skill?
A basic skill is one that the player finds easy and needs little concentration to do. For example a side foot pass in football or a chest pass in netball
Explain a complex skill
A complex skill needs the players complete attention and concentration as it is technically difficult to perform. For example a penalty kick in football or a smash in tennis.
What is a fixed practice?
When the skill is practised over and over again until it is perfected.
Give an example of fixed practice?
A penalty in football or free shot in basketball
What type of skill will be practiced from fixed practice?
Closed skill so the movement can be perfected
What is a variable practice?
Practising the skill in a variety of different situations so that it can be adapted to suit different competitive situations.
What type of skill is practised in variable practice?
Variable practice is essential for open skills.
Give an example of variable practice?
Football in different weather situations, according to the opposition etc.
What is massed practice?
Where the skill is practised until it is learned without taking a break.
Who would use massed practice?
Athletes who are fit and experienced.
What is distributed practice?
Where the skill is practiced over several sessions, or with rest breaks
Who would use distributed practice?
Players of lower ability or less experience or lower fitness
What is intrinsic feedback?
It comes from the performer themselves
