Cardio-Respiratory system Flashcards
What is the cardio-respiratory system?
The interaction of the heart and lunges to supply oxygen to muscles during exercise
What is the definition of cardiovascular?
To do with the heart, blood and blood vessels together.
What is Vasodilation?
When veins swell up or dilate;widening of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to allow increased blood flow.
What is Vasoconstriction?
When veins shrink down; narrowing of the internal diameter (lumen) of the blood vessel to decrease blood flow.
What is the main function of the cardiovascular system?
Transports oxygen, carbon dioxide and nutrients around the body in blood.
What is the function of the arteries?
Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart. They are made up of three layers, with the outside being the strongest. They are the largest of the vessels.
What is the function of the capillaries?
The capillaries are the smallest vessels and they form a network all over the body, which connects veins and arteries.
What is the function of the veins?
They carry deoxygenated blood towards the heart.
What does the term vascular shunt mean?
When you are exercising and blood needs to be redistributed around the body with more oxygen going to the working muscles
Define Vital Capacity
The maximum amount of air that can be breathed in or out
What is Tidal Volume?
The amount of air that enters the lungs during normal breathing when at rest
Where does gas exchange take place?
The Alveoli
What is the formula for minute volume?
Tidal volume x respiratory rate
How is Vital Capacity measured?
Using a spirometer
What is lactic acid and how is it caused?
It is a harmful by product due to oxygen not being present.
