What are PEDS?
Performance Enhancing Drugs are substances that can be taken to produce physical and physiological effects on the person taking it, but also cause some side effects.
What are anabolic steroids?
They mimic the male hormone testerone. This makes the muscles increase in mass and develop bone growth therefore increasing strength. Side effects: deep voice liver disease growth of facial hair and high blood pressure.
What are narcotics and analgesics?
They allow athletes to train whilst being injured, they include heroin. They depress the nervous system and stop pain. The also cause loss of balance and a loss of concentration.
What are Beta Blockers?
They maintain a low heart rate and blood pressure. They give you steadiness and precision. They also include tiredness, insomnia and depression.
What are diuretics?
They increase the amount of urine produced and increase the kidney function. They can remove other drugs that are banned through urine and lose weight. They can cause dehydration and dizziness and kidney problems.
What are peptide hormones?
They increase muscle development by copying the human growth hormone. There is no urine test for HGH and assists in recovery from injury. It also increases the risk of a heart attack.
What are stimulants?
They are the second most commonly used drug in sport. They include cocaine and nicotine. They increase alertness and stimulate the central nervous system. They cause insomnia and a irregular heart beat.
What is the blood doping process?
It increases the number of red blood cells. It improves your endurance and Vo2 max. It causes blood clots and causes and increased risk of heart attack.
What are the functions of the Musculo skeletal system?
They store minerals Produce blood cells Use joints for movement Protection Muscle attachment
