Spirometry Flashcards
What is spirometry
Method of measuring the volume of air that the patient is able to expel from the lungs after maximal inspiration
What is the measured values that spirometry gives
FVC
FEV1
Flow volume curve
Peak expiratory flow
Lung volumes
Transfer factor estimates (compliance)
Describe a volume/time curve
Volume (litres) along vertical
Time (seconds) along horizontal
Shows
TLC - breath in for total lung capacity
RV - exhale as fast as possible to residual volume
FVC - volume produced in vital capacity
Can be used to show post bronchodilator
Describe a flow/volume plot
PEF at the top
Moves down by FEF25, 50, 75 - flow at point in which 25% etc. of total volume to be exhaled has been exhaled
FVC sits along the bottom
Define airways obstruction
<0.7 of FEV1/FVC ratio
What conditions would have airways obstruction
Asthmas - would show great response to salbutamol
What would airways restriction show
Normal of high FEV1/FVE and reduced FVC
