Spirometer trace definitions Flashcards
Tidal volume
The volume of air which moves into OR out of the lungs with each resting breath.
Inspiratory Reserve Volume
The maximum volume of air that can be breathed in over and above a normal inhalation
Expiratory Reserve Volume
The extra amount of air that can be forced out of the lungs over and above the normal tidal volume of air you breathe out
Residual Volume
The volume of air that is left in the lungs when you have exhaled as hard as possible
Vital Capacity
The maximum volume of air that can be breathed in when the strongest possible exhalation is followed by the deepest possible intake of breath
Total lung capacity
Sum of vital capacity and residual volume
Minute ventilation
The volume of ait breathed in or out per minute. (tidal volume x number of breaths).
Which increase during exercise
Tidal volume and Minute ventilation
Which decrease during exercise
Inspiratory reserve volume and Expiratory reserve volume
Which stay the same during exercise
Vital capacity and Residual volume
