Food exercise related functions - Balls paper 2 Flashcards
Carbohydrates
source of fast release energy, used at all intensities, aerobic and anaerobic, slow and quick release.
Fibre
Slows food break down for a sustained energy release
Protein
Minor source of energy, growth and repair of muscle tissue, (non-exercise related: Hormones, enzymes, haemoglobin and RBC’s)
Vitamin B12
Cell growth, blood formation and function, nerve structure and function, energy release during exercise.
Vitamin B complex
B1 - nervous system health
B2 - skin, eyes, and nervous system health.
B6 - form haemoglobin, stores energy from protein and carbohydrates.
Vitamin C
Collagen production/ connective tissue - cartilage (bone to bone)
Vitamin D
Controls the absorption of calcium, bone formation and structure, aids phosphorus absorption.
Sodium
Regulates body’s fluid levels and electrolyte balance.
Too much linked to raised blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
TWO TYPES OF STROKE
Ischemic - blockage of blood vessel in brain.
hemorrhagic - bleeding in or around the brain.
Iron
Formation of haemoglobin and RBC’s, needed for sustained metabolism, removal of drugs from body.
Calcium
Bones and teeth strength, needed for nerve/muscle function.
