Spinal organisation Flashcards
What are monosynaptic relfexes
Rapid involuntary response triggered by stretching of muscle spindle
Myotatic reflex is protective mechanism that occurs when muscle is stretched – simple circuitry pathway in spinal cord that bypasses brain
Allows for quick automatic response
Fill in the reflex arc table
What are the components of muscle spindles
Intrafusal muscle fibres
Sensory receptors
Type Ia afferent - Wrap around nuclear bag fibres & Highly sensitive to changes in muscle length & rate of change, Monosynaptic responses
Type II afferent - Located in nuclear chain fibres & Sensitive to change in muscle length, Polysynaptic responses
Motor innervation
Muscle spindle receives motor innervation from gamma motor neurons
Innervate contractile ends of intrafusal muscle fibres (polar regions)
What is function of golgi tendon organs
Sense muscle tension
Reflex regulation – reverse myotatic reflex
Protection against excessive force
What is Schiff Sherrington syndrome
Severe damage to thoracolumbar region of spinal cord causing heightened sensitivity due to disruption of normal sensory processing pathways
Fill in the clinical lesion localisation table
What is a spinal segment
Refers to specific region of spinal cord & spinal nerves that emerge from that region
