Q
Explain the pupillary light reflex pathway
A
- Light enters eye through cornea & passes through lens to reach retina
- Photoreceptor cells detect light & convert it to electrical signals which are transmitted to ganglion cells
- Ganglion cells transmit information and transmit it via optic nerve
- Optic nerve fibres from each eye converge at optic chiasm & travel to visual centres in brain where they synapse with neurons involved in pupillary light reflex
- Parasympathetic preganglionic neurons send signal via oculomotor nerve to ciliary ganglion
- Preganglionic fibres synapse with post ganglionic fibres which then reach the iris sphincter muscle
- Iris sphincter muscle contracts which constricts the pupil
