Q

Explain the pupillary light reflex pathway

A
  1. Light enters eye through cornea & passes through lens to reach retina
  2. Photoreceptor cells detect light & convert it to electrical signals which are transmitted to ganglion cells
  3. Ganglion cells transmit information and transmit it via optic nerve
  4. Optic nerve fibres from each eye converge at optic chiasm & travel to visual centres in brain where they synapse with neurons involved in pupillary light reflex
  5. Parasympathetic preganglionic neurons send signal via oculomotor nerve to ciliary ganglion
  6. Preganglionic fibres synapse with post ganglionic fibres which then reach the iris sphincter muscle
  7. Iris sphincter muscle contracts which constricts the pupil
