Proprioception Flashcards

1
Q

Define proprioception

A

System responsible for detecting changes in position of trunk, limbs & head

Kinaesthesia

Sense of joint position & movement

Receptors:
Muscle spindles
Golgi tendon organs

A

Involved in maintaining posture, balance & coordinating movements without needing active conscious attention

Processed in spinal cord & lower brain regions

Q

What is the spinocerebellar tract

A

Ascending pathways that relay proprioceptive information from body to cerebellum

Responsible for providing feedback about position, movement & tension of muscles/tendons to cerebellum

Q

What is the cuneate/gracile tract

A

information related to fine touch, vibration & conscious proprioception to brain

Tracts primarily carry information from upper (cuneate) & lower (gracile) extremities
