6
Q

where does spinal nerve exit from thoracic region downwards?

A

for e.g. thoracic 1 spinal nerve will be passing through intervertebral foramen just below thoracic 1 vertebral body

in cervical region - one extra spinal nerve and c1 spinal nerve goes over vertebra

Q

what is cauda equina?

A

The bundle of spinal nerve roots in the lumbar cistern of the subarachnoid space prior to termination of spinal cord resembles a horse tail

Q

Components of spinal nerve

A

posterior root of spinal nerve- receives afferent/sensory fibres which carry sensation of touch, pain , temp from periphery

dorsal root ganglia- cell bodies

anterior roots of spinal nerves - contain efferent/ motor fibres which supply skeletal muscle.

anterior horn-cell bodies of motor neurons

16
Q

What does dorsal/ posterior rami supply?

A

facet joints
deep muscles of back
skin of back

17
Q

what does anterior rami supply?

A

supplying anterolateral part of trunks and limbs

18
Q

What is in the epidural space?

A

internal vertebral venous plexus with some fat and connective tissue

19
Q

What are arachnoid trabeculae?

A

avascular
thin structures that connect arachnoid matter with pia matter

20
Q

Describe pia matter?

A

Blood vessels which supply spinal cord

21
Q

What is the space between the pia and arachnoid matter?

A

sub arachnoid space - contains cerebral spinal fluid

22
Q

Describe denticulate ligament?

A

ligament in pia matter that goes from side to side and supports spinal cord to hang inside sub arachnoid space

23
Q

where do dural sac terminate?

A

at level of s2 vertebral level and attached to tip of coccyx by filum terminale externum

24
Q

Where is thoracolumbar/ sympathetic outflow of sympathetic NS?

A

t1-l2 segment maybe till l3

cell bodies of sympathetic neurons are located at lateral horn of grey matter and will synapse into sympathetic ganglia on either side of spinal cord

25
Where is craniosacral/ parasympathetic out flow?
Cranial nerves( 3,7,9,10) sacral (2,3,4)- pelvic splanchnic nerve
26
Give characteristics of spinal cord ischaemia?
deficiency of blood supply to spinal cord and patient can develop muscle weakness and paralysis.
27
Where is the venous drainage of spinal cord going into?
internal vertebral venous plexus - epidural( outside dura matter but inside vertebral body) and goes in cerebrodural venous sinuses (skull).
28
What can happen if infection and cancer connected to veins which spread into vertebral body?
infection and cancer can spread to vertebrae/ spinal cord/ brain/ skull from other part of body
29
Give characteristics of spinal cord injury?
could be blunt trauma, penetrating injury or disc prolapse or bone metastastis from a primary cancer/ stenosis of vertebral canal. may lead to complete loss of motor and sensory function
30
where and why does lumbar puncture take place?
between l2 and l3 or l4-l5 to collect CSF fluid (lumbar puncture) and as spinal cord ended used for epidural anaethesia (taken from epidural space_
