Who were the participants within the Sperry study?
Group of 11 American who have severe epileptic seizures that could not be controlled by medication and so would be up for a split-brain operation
What was the aim of Sperrys study?
To study the psychological effects of hemispheric disconnection in split-brain patients with severe epilepsy
What was the apparatus for studying split - brain patients in Sperrys study?
- one eye covered, gaze at centre of projection screen
- visual stimuli projected on screen to either left or right - very high speed
- below the screen there’s a gap for participants could reach objects
Why were participants shown pictures at very high speed in Sperry’s study?
The eye only will have time to process the image in the visual field where it is placed
The participant has no time to move their eye or head to show the other visual field
What were the baseline results of Sperry?
If a projected picture is shown to one visual field - it’ll only be recognised by that visual field if it appears again
•RVF - participant can draw & write it
•LVF - participant sees nothing/light
The right hemisphere cannot speak or write

Participant has to pick out the object, spell the object and say the word he has seen
