Specific sensations
smell, taste, vision, hearing, balance
38
Functions of the Eye
Consists of three distinct tunic layers
- Fibrous tunic:outermost layer...protective coat
- Vascular tunic:middle layer...blood supply
- Sensory tunic:innermost layer, retina. consists of rods and cones
39
Rods
function in dim light. black and white vision
40
Cones
function in bright light, color vision
41
Optic nerve
extends from the retina to the visual regions of the brain
42
Blind spot
center of the optic disc, where the nerve and blood vessels enter the eye...has neither rods nor cones.
43
Supporting eye structures
extra-ocular muscles, eyelids, eyelashes, lacrimal glands (produce tears)
44
Function of the Ear
Sense receptor organ responsible for hearing and equilibrium.
- hearing is a function of the cochlea
- equilibrium is a function of the semicircular canals and vestibule
45
Three aspects of the ear
External: conducts sound waves through the air
Middle: conducts sound waves through bone
Inner: conducts sound waves through fluid
46
Middle ear bones
Malleus(hammer): attached to the tympanic membrane
Incus(anvil):between the malleus and the stapes
Stapes(stirrup):between the incus and the oval window
47
Cochlea
first structure of the inner ear
| -snail-shaped, filled with fluid called perilymph and lined with sensitive nerve endings called hair cells.
48
equilibrium
Vestibular system: (part of the inner ear) devoted to the control of balance and eye movement.
- consists of fluid filled tubes
- semicircular canals
