Special Senses Flashcards
what do the eyelids and eyelashes do?
keep out dirt and bacteria
what are the lacrimal glands connected too
connected to the nasal cavity
what’s the function of the lacrimal glands
they produce tears witch moisten and cleanse the eye
whats conjunctiva
the mucus membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the front of the eye providing additional protection
whats the sclera?
is the “white” part of the eye, the outermost layer
whats the function of the sclera?
it helps maintain the eyes shape
whats the cornea?
transparent front of the sclera
whats the choroid coat ?
the middle layer that is the blood vessels that nourish
whats the retina?
the inner lining of the eyeball that light waves fall onto after passing through the eye
what’s the function of the retina
transmits impulces to the optic nerve
what are photoreceptors?
rods and cones
whats the iris?
colored portion of the eye
whats the pupil
opening int he center of the iris
where is the lens located?
behind the pupil
whats the lens function?
refracts rays to focus on retina
what do accommodates allow you to do?
allow near/far vision
hyperopia disease?
disease where the eyeball is too short effecting farsighness vision
What corrects hyperopia
Convex lenses
Myopia disease?
Disease where eyeball is too long effecting nearsighted vision
How do you correct myopia
Concave lenses and radial keratomoy surgery
Amblyopia?
Lazy eye
How do you correct amblyopia
Surgery, glasses, exercises and patching
Strabismus disease
Eyes dont move or focus together
How do you correct strabismus
Surgery, glasses, exercises and patching
What age group is strabismus most common in
Children
Whats astigmatism disease
Abnormal curvature of cornea
How do you correct astigmatism
Glasses or contacts
Whats a cataract
Cloudy lens
Whats glaucoma? Hows it controlled?
Increased intruoocular pressure. With meds
Whats conjunctivitis?
Contagious eye infection
How is conjunctivitis treated?
Antibiotics, eye drops, cream
Whats the ear?
Controls hearing and balances by transmitting impulses from sound waves too auditory nerve
Whats the pinna/auricle?
Outer visible part of the ear (largest structure)
Whats the external auditory canal?
The glands that produce cerumen (wax)
Whats cerumen?
Wax
Whats the tympanic membrane?
Eardrum that separates the outer ear from the middle ear . Vibrates when sound waves hit
Middle ear?
Small cavity in the temporal bone
Three bones of middle ear
Malleus ,incus, stapes
What do the Malleus ,incus, stapes in the middle ear do?
Transmit sound waves in the ear
Whats the inner ear?
Oval window thats the entrance too other parts of inner ear
Cochlea?
Organ of corti that transmits impulses to the auditory nerves
Semicircular canals?
Balance and equilibrium
Conductive hearing loss? Treat?
Sound Waves dont conduct to the inner ear because ruptured tempanic membrane
Treat- surgery , hearing age
Sensory hearing loss?
Damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve
Ottis media? Treat?
Infection of the middle ear that causes sore throat
T- antibiotics , myringotomy
Otitis extetna ? Treat?
Inflammation of external auditory canal (swimmers ear)
T- antibiotics , warm compresses
Otosclerosis?
Stapes become immobile causes conductive hearing loss
