What is a special instruction (technical) SI(T)?
A temporary instructions issued by or on behalf of TAA or the PT to undertake work to identify, monitor, repair or prevent the occurrence or re-occurrence of a potential fault in an aircraft or item of equipment.
What forms do technical instructions take?
STI - Special Technical Instruction UTI - Urgent Technical Instruction SI - Servicing Instruction
RTI - Routine Technical Instruction
Describe a SI
- Initiated on recommendation of DO Design Organisation or request of TAA or the PT
- Gives instructions for re-current remedial action – to repair of prevent a potential fault, usually a temporary measure.
- Normally superseded by an amendment to the technical publication
Describe a RTI
- DO input not required
- Issued by PT
- May be issued in response to a Serious Fault Signal
- Can be either recurrent or non-recurrent
- Remedial action IS NOT necessary within 14 days / 25 flying hours

- DO input not immediately required
- Issued by PT
- May be issued in response to a Serious Fault Signal
- Can be either recurrent or non-recurrent
- Remedial action IS necessary within 14 days / 25 flying hours
How do we receive Special Instructions (technical)?
- The PT distributes them to all affected organisations i.e. Front line commands, stations, ships, Units and external agencies.
- Transmitted by signal for AC or equipment embarked on RN Ships.

For how long is a SI(T) extant?
- STI/SI = 24 months from date of issue
- UTI = 6 months from date of issue
- RTI = 12 months from date of issue
How is a SI(T) cancelled?
UTI/RTI – cancelled on expiry of any pre-determined timescale or on supersession by a new TI
STI/SI – cancelled once the requirement has been satisfied or the instruction superseded
