SP- Spray Ponds Flashcards
What is the purpose of the Spray Pond System?
Removes heat from Essential Cooling Water during normal or emergency shutdown of the plant
Removes heat from the DG when a DG is running
Rejects heat to atmosphere
How much storage capacity are the Essential Spray Ponds built for? How would that change if I cross connected the spray ponds?
13 days during normal or emergency operations
Cross connected, a single spray pond train would have 26 days of storage capacity
What are the six chemicals added to the Spray Pond System and their purpose?
Hypochlorite – minimize biological growth, also raises SP pH as side effect
Biocide – minimize biological induced corrosion
Sulfuric Acid – lowers pH to specifically minimize corrosion and scale
Copper Corrosion Inhibitor – minimize system corrosion with film to protect hx, added during SP operation
Mild Steel Corrosion Inhibitor – minimize system corrosion
Dispersant – provides colloidal suspension for scale and deposit control to ease filtering
What system provides hypochlorite to the SP system?
Chlorine Injection system (CI)
What systems can provide makeup water to the spray ponds?
DS, TB, or Fire Protection as a backup
What directs the use of DS or TB as makeup water?
Chemistry Control Instruction
What would a loss of Instrument Air have on the SP system?
Level indication will have to be obtained locally at the Spray Ponds
What seismic category does the Spray Pond fall under?
Category 1
How many spray headers are provided in each pond?
Four
How many spray nozzles per pond?
320
How can we back-fill spray pond piping?
Utilize a bypass header that allows 100% of the SP system flow to enter the spray ponds without passing through the spray nozzles
Concerning our two makeup sources for the spray pond, DS and TB, how do they differ in calcium concentration and biological activity?
DS has more calcium but less biological activity
TB has less calcium, but more biological activity
What are the Spray Pond Pumps rated for?
16300 gpm
How can I start the Spray Pond pumps manually?
From the control room or the supply breaker
What system provides power to the Spray Pond pumps?
PBA-S03 for ‘A’
PBB-S04 for ‘B’
When would the Spray Pond pumps automatically start?
DGSS, SIAS, CSAS, Control Room Ventilation Isolation Actuation Signal (CRVIAS), Control room Essential Filtration Actuation Signal (CREFAS), AFAS, and LOP, load shed
When a Spray Pond pump starts, what else starts with it? Why?
Spray Pond pump house Exhaust Fan to ensure pump operability
What is the purpose of the Spray Pond Filter Pump?
To maintain Essential Spray Pond water within chemistry specifications
What is the capacity of the Spray Pond Filter pump?
1200 gpm
What system powers the Spray Pond Filter pumps?
NH
What would automatically stop the Spray Pond Filter Pump?
Low level in the associated spray pond (13’ 7.5”)
What sort of electrical protection do I have for the Spray Pond Filter pump?
Overcurrent
If silica rates are high in the Spray Ponds, what can be used for chemistry control?
Feed and Bleed – a line from the discharge of the Spray Pond Filter Pump sends water from the Spray Pond to the CW intake canal at a flow rate directed by Chemistry
